Yep, we remember that whole Pepsi challenge thing well. But we’ve never heard of the book…and should check it out, since it sounds interesting (though potentially depressing as well…)

clea, greg,

wonderful show, yet again, with a special place in my heart as you reviewed my good friend AJ’s requested item. we’ve all grown to love fountain drinks in our little circle, so it’s nice to hear the soda discussion.

whenever i hear about the pepsi/coke debate, i have to ask if you all know about the ‘pepsi challenge’ debacle… even though many know the story, i like to make sure :-)

the reason pepsi won in the ‘pepsi challenge’ is due to the sweetness of pepsi, so a small taste is going to be sweeter than a small taste of coke, and sweetness being a favorite of Americans will win the vote. poor Coca-Cola took this loss to heart with out exploring the details, came out with the sweeter ‘Coke II’ or new coke. Huge failure, angering and probably even losing customers for them, some perhaps for life. Although pepsi won the challenge, a full serving of pepsi can be kind of cloying or too sweet for many. This is one of my favorite stories and you can find it, and lots more cool stories about buying habits in Paco Underhill’s “Why We Buy”. If there’s ever a book worth reading today, that’s the one.

Pizza will never get under a 9, unless it’s that terrible pizza I had back in college which was cardboard with a can of tomato sauce poured on it. As for Pepsi vs. Coke–I don’t drink colas much, but for me Pepsi just tastes a little better. Dr. Pepper, on the other hand…yeesh. 23 flavors of blech. :)

I agree that regular Pepsi isn’t anywhere near Coke, but I can stomach Diet P much better than Diet C.

Glad you enjoyed it, guys. As a long-time Connecticut resident myself (grew up in a small town about a half hour west of Hartford, alma mater is UCONN), I’m glad AJ understands the whole “soda” deal. As for Clea imitating the sad string section…yep, she’s about as multitalented as they come, though I admit I’m probably a bit biased. :) Thanks for the request (and everyone else, why don’t you follow AJ’s lead? We’re rarin’ to go… :) )

Thanks for the well thought out and highly entertaining review. I’m honored by your “7.” My wife, while slighly wounded by Greg’s distaste for DDP, enjoyed the “Soda Segment” as well. I have three quick comments:

1) We agree with Clea’s comment on the importance of ice, which, leads to our love of the styrofoam cup’s ability to keep the drink cold.

2) We tend to use the term “cokes” to describe all fountain drinks. I’m from CT originally and always said “soda,” but have adopted several Floridian terms. Ya’ll know what I mean, right?

and finally, 3) The shining moment was Clea’s ability to imitate a sad string section while you read my plea for help over the pod-waves.
